Rogue s The tarting out on heroics & my stats; good or bad?

So the last 2 days I did my first 2 heroics (both Ramparts).

Before I go into details about my experiences I'll give you a little background on my style of play. I've never been a serious instance player. I did Stockade, DM, Gnomer & ZF a couple times whilst leveling, and then Ramparts (about 10 times), SV (twice), Shadow Labs (twice) and a few others in OL. So as you can tell I am not the most experienced player when it comes to instances, I spend alot of time questing whilst chatting to guildies.

However, I did alot of PVP and basically my entire gear is PvP epics, except 2 rings (aldor blue & crappy lv67 green) & the Shattered Sun epic necklace & epic engineering head. The rest is all the PvP set. You can check me out here (although my trinkets add alot to the stats, so hopefully I dont have a riding crop on when you check)

You can tell that its not great gear for doing high end instances.

Now on the my first 2 heroic experiences. The question I will be asking is about my damage output and if you can judge my performances by those stats.

The first PuG was with a healer from my guild. We had a good tank but the other DPS Mage/Hunter were not great. In the end the the damage output was like this;

Tank had about 31%, I had about 30%, and the mage/hunter about 19% each. Gear wise, the hunter & mage had lv70 blues much better suited to PvE

The second PuG was with a friend of mine & his 3 friends. They basically do Heroic ramparts 3-4 times a week with each other. The other 2 DPS were mages. The Damage stats ended up like this

Mage 1: 29.1%

Mage 2: 28.5%

Me: 27.9%

the tank picked up the rest.

Gear wise these guys were in half Kara/heroic epics and rest lv70 blues.

During this instance, the tank (who is an alt character and maybe not as well geared) at times would have less threat than me, so I would have to stop for a few seconds whilst the mages could continue from a distance.

Now I know basic stats like this wont tell you my overall performance, but what do you guys think from this? I dont consider myself a great player and I dont have that much knowledge about PvE. How do I stack up on the damage output scale? Is this ok for a rookie?

Where should a rogue be aiming to be? Is there a % that i should be aiming to reach?

Also what is the difference between rogue & mage damage output. Should a rogue expect to be delivering more damage than a mage, or do mages usually have better output?

I'm sure I've used many generalisations here, but again I'm new to this side of the game Any tips would be appreciated

edit: Somehow my title got messed up.

It's meant to read Rogue starting out on heroics & my stats; good or bad?

Now I look like an even bigger idiot lol|||Looks like you did fine - and you noticed about your threat, which is the big thing for people used to pvp. Good going :-)|||both of those runs sound like you did fine. Gear's important but the way you play will determine a lot too. Your weapons will also be important.

Your spec is odd... it's not setup for PvE and even for PvP I'd think about things like the 4/5 Deflection (why not take 5/5 and Riposte?) and the lack of a weapon spec hurts you in instances and raids. Think about maybe doing a 19/42/0 PVE spec and speccing for PvP when you do that.

Mages v rogues... it's basically multiple target dps vs single. You should come out on top on most bosses or other high hp single targets... a mage will have more damage when they can AoE down groups.

As for your % damage... it *really* depends on the other players, what instance, etc. If you're holding your own against the others and they seem weel geared and decent players, good. Grab the drops you can use for PvE, bank the badges and keep it up.|||Well my spec has always been pretty wacky. Basically its suited to solo play, not PvP or Pve. Ive always put points in things that enhance the enjoyment of solo play (hence the 12 points in Subtlety in largely unimportant areas, as well as 4 points in enhanced spirt/endurance).

I realise using Sword/Fist is also pretty disadvantageous. I do have a Felsteel Longblade (with Mongoose) in the bank. Its not the best offhand, but would I be better of using that & having 5 points in sword specialisation?

So whats better;

Vindicators Brand (+ Mongoose) & Gladiators Left Ripper (+20 Agi)

-or-

Vindicators Brand (+ Mongoose) & Felsteel Longblade (+ Mongoose) + 5 points in Sword Specialisation

Also are the talent points that ive used, that are mainly just important for PvP, that maybe I should consider getting rid off? While I do PvP, ideally my spec should be more focused towards instances. I dont really PvP competitivly. I enjoy instances alot more, its just the guild is pretty casual, so I usually have to PuG (which I dont enjoy)|||For any question related to gear and spec, I would advise you to use the spreadsheet from rogue.raidcal.com

It might look like a very complicated file and the dps it projects is far from realistic, but it is excellent at determining if your dps will go up or down when equiping a certain item or respeccing to a certain talent build.

It's also very handy for gemming, raid buffing and enchanting.|||Quote:

Yeah I figured. Ok um... first, DE the Longblade. It hurts me to see rogues use that thing... it's too fast for MH and too slow for an OH...

Sword/fist is OK... If I were you I'd either grab the S1 MH fist or the S1 sword set depending on how much honor you have and what you like. OR... simply stay the way you are and wait for Season 4 to come out and get the S2 weapons. If you go swords you want a slower, higher damage MH and a fast OH... 1.5 or better. The PvP combination is Slicer/Quickblade. The fists come in matched sets... but same thing really, slow MH, fast OH.

Once you have the same weapons in both hands, pick that weapon specialization.

Spec wise... if you want to maximize your dps you'll end up with some combination of 20/41, 19/42, 17/44... 19/42 is the most common of the Combat builds. You want to use points to increase damage and then for filler... but don't overuse the filler points. Deflection? NIce, but really expensive since you should not be fighting from the front of the mob in instances. Gouge? Again, you shouldn't be in front of mobs and the chance that gouge will remain unbroken long enough for the extra time granted by Imp Gouge to matter is small.

The problem with Combat is that it really isn't that fun in PvP. So... you can respec to a more PvP oriented build (Shadowstep maybe) or you can do a trispec build... 11/2x/2x where you go down to Hemo in Sub and down through Weapon Expertise in Combat. Gold is cheap enough that weekly respecs aren't a big deal... but it's up to you.

Here are some sample builds:

19/42 Combat

Pretty much the standard for instance and raiding PvE.

Shadowstep

I've not played with ShS a ton and there are a lot of fillers and ways you can alter this... very fun to solo with, quest with. Does fine in 5 mans with good enough gear (you need AP to make this shine). Fun in PvP. Not a raid build

Oh - and I second the spreadsheet call... especially on gems, gear upgrades, specific spec things.|||Tough question... if your really interested in increasing your DPS as a rogue it helps to know what spec you are... are you Assassination, Combat (and if so which wep), or Subtlety?

Combat swords is usually considered the best overall DPS for rogues.. wowinsider.com and elitistjerks.com have great guides for rogues... I've been playing rogue in PVP for awhile now and I ran my way up through 70 Subtlety before switching over to Combat swords...

So I'd say ur doing fine for the beginning heroics but if you want to keep advancing through the PVE end game you might want to look at respeccing if your not properly PVE specced already... its up to u... if u just want to run some heroics every once in awhile then your doing fine and pulling your weight fairly well... doesn't sound like you made the usual big mistake of pvpers which is pulling aggro from your tank...
